The year is 2021 of the 21st century, and human beings once again showed they have learnt no lessons from their history.
When the US government identified Al Qaeda as the masterminds of the September 11 2001 attacks its military invaded Afghanistan just after 26 days. It was there for 20 more years until the withdrawal this year.
“We will end the symbolic withdrawal on September 11,” President Joe Biden of the United States said as if to draw victory from the jaws of defeat.
Over the past 20 years, the US government has poured $978 billion into Afghanistan which is equivalent to 51 years of Afghanistan’s GDP of $19.2 dollars. As a result, Afghanistan has been turned into ruin, and 240,000 people have lost their lives including 78,000 civilians.
And 5 million people have become refugees in neighbouring countries and are at Europe’s gates. At the end of this savage 20-year war, the only thing left by the US military in Afghanistan is a ruthless Taliban regime it fought for so long to eradicate.
Eventually, the Taliban has returned to power Afghanistan – a guerrilla force that the CIA, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan set up in 1994 to fight the Russians. Needless to say, the Taliban was the creature of the US’ policy toward Central Asia to block Russia’s military strategy to secure its southern flank and find natural resources..
But the Taliban became enemies of the United States since they spread Islamic fundamentalism and provided military bases to al Qaeda. In the end, with the 9/11, the US did not need the Taliban anymore and in fact regarded them as enemy.
Since then, the Taliban have resisted using the so-called Pashtun Belt in the southern and eastern parts of the country that borders Pakistan until signed the Peace Agreement with the US on the condition of the withdrawal of US troops in 2020.
The Taliban, which has grown rapidly this year, has already occupied 50% of Afghanistan’s territory with 85,000 troops. Following the capture of Kunduz, the largest strategic point in the north on the 8th, the Taliban are currently engaged in a battle to occupy Kandahar, their birth place in the south. In the first place, the 20-year war by the US military turned out to be futile.
Still, Joe Biden was sure that “the Taliban will not occupy Kabul”. It’s worth a bet. I believe that the Taliban will capture Kabul only in one or two months after the withdrawal of the US forces. This is because Afghanistan has been divided into a number of ethnics including Pashtun, Tajiki, Uzbek, and Hazara which controled by corrupt warlords who have repeatedly give and take the territory with money.
I saw with my own eyes that the Taliban captured Kabul in two years and occupied over 90% of the territory in three years after started from Kandahar in 1994. At that time, the Taliban spread money and entered Kabul without blood. Just as Kunduz was captured four days ago without a battle.
It was also revealed that 350,000 Afghan government troops were phantoms. Afghanistan is again entering into a long war with no end in sight. Leaving only the question of why the US invaded Afghanistan for 20 years.
