The host nation registers a resounding win over UAE for a berth at the 9th ICC T20 Cricket World Cup

Nepal has been selected for the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in the US and West Indies next year. Nepal reached the final of the Asia qualifier after defeating UAE by eight wickets in the semi-final at Mulpani Cricket Ground on Friday.

The other finalist, Oman which defeated Bahrain, has also secured its berth at the World Cup. Nepal will play Oman in the finals, a repeat line-up from Thursday when the hosts lost to the Arab nation by a mere 5 runs. 

This is the second time Nepal has qualified for the World Cup for the second time, the first time being in 2014. 

On Friday’s semi-finals, Nepal was chasing the target of 135 runs set by the UAE which Nepal completed by just losing 2 wickets in 18.1 overs. Aasif Sheikh scored 63 runs in 50 balls, two of them sixes and six fours.

Similarly, Rohit Paudel scored 35, Gulson scored 22 and Kushal Bhurtel 11 runs. Nilansh Keswani and Basil Hameed took one wicket each for UAE.

UAE batted first and scored 134 for the loss of nine wickets. Vriitya Aravind scored 64, Muhammad Waseem 26, Alishan Sharafu 16 and Asif Khan 13 runs for UAE.

Before the semi-finals, Nepal defeated Hong Kong and Malaysia before losing to Oman. Two teams making it to the finals of the qualifiers will automatically be selected for the World Cup next year.  

The T20 World Cup 2024 is the ninth edition of the tournament since it started in 2007. Next year’s event will be the biggest yet with 20 nations participating. So far, 18 teams have been finalised. Africa qualifiers will decide the last two.
