Nepalis on Monday celebrated the annual rice planting day that marks the beginning of paddy season across the country. However, strong rains this year has meant that paddy plantation started early in many parts of the country.
Rice is is a staple crop in Nepal, and is the primary source of livelihood and income for more than two-thirds of farm households, contributing more than 7% to the total GDP.
It is not all work however— Asar 15 is a day of celebration. Farmers plant their paddy to song and dance, partake in mud-splashing, and enjoy the traditional feast of dahi-chiura.
