SLAP-HAPPY

RSS

The media is better placed than most to predict what will happen next in politics, but in Nepal this does not always apply. When politicians cannot be held accountable for what they say or do in private or public, anyone who claims to know what is going on is on shaky ground indeed.

With every turn of events in the ongoing saga of the peace process, there has been cause for hope, cynicism or despair. The formal handover of PLA combatants to the Special Committee a fortnight ago was one such milestone. Did the event represent a major stride towards integration of the ex-combatants, and thereby the conclusion of the peace process? Or was it another 'red' herring let loose by Chairman Dahal to appease his detractors on the domestic and international fronts?

Once more, the potential significance of the event has been obfuscated by statements from the Maoist leadership claiming they still hold the chain of command over the PLA. More immediately, the possibility of building on the symbolic handover is fizzling out in the all-too-familiar tussle for power.

Which brings us to Jhala Nath Khanal, our likely prime minister-elect at the time of going to press. Did that resounding slap not bring him to his senses? Even if he could dismiss his attacker as a 'gnat', surely he is politically perceptive enough to recognise the public anger against him and his ilk in the applause that slap generated? To go from red-faced to abir-faced will not be enough to erase the memory. He may be able to spin his ludicrous position into one of necessity, but all we can hear is this: "I withdrew support for a majority government led by my own party, and now I am ready to lead another majority government."

The difference, of course, is that there will be many more hands reaching out to slap him once he settles down in Baluwatar. He will lead a government, thanks to the last-minute shenanigans of MJF (Democratic)'s Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar. But this will be a government that the Maoists will assume they can control. His party and the nation may have been better off letting the Maoists lead from the front. With leaders like Khanal, who needs followers?

Khanal won't have a honeymoon; the knives will be out before very long. Let's hope the famous slap sharpened his senses. He will be hard-pushed to keep his eyes on the tough road ahead if he's busy watching his back. But we wish him luck. He will need all the diplomatic skills he can muster just to stay afloat, but if he is to make a mark before 28 May, he will need to rise above the treacherous waters of Nepali politics.

PLA handover is good cause from now on they will not get hide like they used to get from UNMIN.

jhallu ram, the most unpopular person in nepal has become pm..... the weakest probable.

any idea! how to response when maoist go for revolt in this situation?

since, some paper was saying, maoist is demanding home or defence minister... ?(a big question mark)........... mahara could become foreign minister--- may be he wants to reach out to international drug lords ....  formally this time.

or he wants to full fill maoist part of the agreement made with the drug lord.

2. K. K. Sharma

Big deal.! one bahun goes another bahun comes. In earlier days, one Rana used to go another Rana used to come.

But the communist aliance has come to stay. Will they sign the extradition treaty with India, jeoparding our relations with other friendly countries ?

Of course, apart from common ideology, control of the Maoist, at least in parts, is also there. Why else would Maoist support Jhallu baje.

3. kamal.kishor
Once I was supporter of Jhalanath but no more. He is an intellectual who knows how to play with words, can give speech hrs after hrs quoting Lenin, Marx and Mao but does not know and believe in what he says. He became Chairman with the Maoists support in the name of creating left unity. He did everything to change the equation of Madhav's government tuning in with Dahal. A puppet is never better than the manipulator.
He broke the alliance of UML with NC and other parties. An anti-maoists political alliance of all the parties was broken and a dangerous situation in which the political spectrum is clearly divided into left and right has been created. This is regression in every sense. This alliance won't be able to complete writing of constitution with consensus. Who will be blamed? UML. What happens in the next election? UML will be further downsized. Congratulation Khahal!!!!!

4. Devi-Prasad
Jheli Jhalu forget my slapping for chair -he can not resolve the interest of Prachanda.. The are Juka for the Nation. How they service and survive every body knows. Jhalu will offer national treasury to them for his stability. I will

Jhal Nath Khanal is  a Bahun by only birth.  He is a communist  and so has no caste or creed.  He is a non-practicing Bahun.  He does not no any virtue of a Brahmin.  He can be classified as a Brahma- rakshyasha.; as he is an atheist.

are commies/communism all about lying, deception?

uml have be talking about punishing who cross the party line. now, will they punish jhallu ram.

may be this is why in many parts of the world, commies are taken as plague.

die commies die.

jhallu ram is the biggest liar outside maoist.

Jhala Nath when he was a  young  Naxalite, Charu Mazumdar's Chela was in detaintion in Eastern Nepal Anchal; and Lila raj Bista was the Anchaladhis. After some time in detaintion he was asked to use stick and carrot methotd to deal with the young communists by the regime. Then Lila Raj started courting him. Hetried tobring him in to the Panchayatand started inviting him to his residence for dinner at night time. Even after long prsuasion he failed to make him accept { Panchayat. Lila Raj got infuriated one night and Spat him in the face of Jhala Nath and stopped courting him. This made Jhala a leader.
Devi Prashad slapped him on his cheek and made him a Prime Minister of The Republic of Nepal.
As he  is neither Jesus nor A Gandhi he did not ask Devi Prashad to slap him on the other cheek.  So he lost his chance of becoming the President of the New Republic. Ha ha ha.

13. who cares
some media is saying that this 7 point deceiving deal has been going on for a year.

this could be the greatest betrayal in the history of UML.

cant believe, 60 mps signed to make madhave nepal resign supporting jhallu ram.

jhallu ram gang have been threatening others of taking disciplinary action, now will uml take disciplinary action on jhallu gang.

may be this was the reason, so called greatest leaders in uml like manmohan, madan bhandary always sidelined jhallu ram in uml. their great mind recognized this rat.

i never gave more importance to young leaders just because of their age. here is the proof, most of those supporting jhallu ram seemed to be young and cause they are young they did not know the past of individual and they tend to support those and they lack experience.

i say, media should be blamed too for not regularly publishing detailed bio-graph of those individuals.

MAOSIT IS NOISY SELF DESTRUCTIVE, UML IS SILENT SELF DESTRUCTIVE.

its time, either uml sideline jhallu ram, bam gang or nepalese should sideline uml.

nepalese have been suffering for a long time now for no reason. lets hope this will bring some positive change- i hope this makes voters (democratic supporters) matured and from next time vote for those, the best from democrats, instead of voting for liars, commies, fellow villager, in laws.....      ......... media can play creative role here.

14. Puplic
See the fingers of Devi Prasad, he slapped one still four balanced to be slapped four leaders responsible to form the cabinet of Ministers. If these leaders don't coplete the task in one week, how they will lead over all peace process ( look at Terai 100 peoples killed due to failure of politics in 2010 killing of people continued , now two zone has band since a week ) who will manage this. public has voted them for peace and prosperity of Nepal and Nepali, the should quit the habit of   operating political party as private limited company. learn from Egypt now only one option balance. more delaying more harmful to Gang of four?

15. Doctor
Don't worry Devi-prsad average expected life span in Nepal is 62 years only kainal running in 61, if cabinet not form by tomorrow there may be heart attack Your all problem solved, WHO report also confirm possibility 55% and he is like bangur.Be happy
