Voter registrations and citizenship distribution which were halted in the first week of April have resumed today. According to the Election Commission the registration and distribution drive began early this morning in various districts. Around one million voters without citizenship and more than 3 million voters are yet to be registered.

Election Commission officer Dolakh Bahadur Gurung informed that the Home Ministry has mobilised police to ensure smooth completion of the campaign. According to Gurung 11.3 million voters have already been registered and the number is likely to reach above 15 million after the voter role update campaign.

The commission has also urged everyone to ensure smooth completion of the campaign without any disruption.

Mission Obstruction

An alliance of fringe parties led by CPN-Maoist on Saturday decided to obstruct the voter roll update and citizenship distribution process. The alliance is set to submit a memorandum to the Election Commission on Sunday stating that the special campaign for citizenship distribution before elections is a conspiracy to provide Nepali citizenship to foreigners.

The alliance of 57 parties has rejected calls from the government to hold talks and demanded resignation of the Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi led government.
