For the second day in a row, activists gathered outside the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar to protest against the rising incidents of violent abuse of women and the government’s apathy towards proper investigation.

Citing recent cases of violent abuse and subsequent deaths of Shiva Hasmi of Bardiya and Bindu Thakur of Bara, the protestors demanded Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar’s resignation for failing to provide security. They have also called for high-level investigation of the cases and for those found guilty to be charged according to law.

On Friday, the government gave Rs 150,000 as damages to a woman from Bhojpur who was robbed and raped by airport officials, prompting human rights activists to gather en masse in condemnation of the decision.

The protests on Saturday and Sunday were led by a national network of women’s rights workers and attended by citizens from all sections of society.
