Faced with opposition from the political parties, and a stay order from the Supreme Court, the government decided on Sunday to scrap the contract to print machine readable passports with India. Nagarik reports:

The cabinet meeting decided to scrap the MRP deal with India. Information Minister Shankar Pokharel said “the government decided to scrap the deal with the recommendation of various parliamentary committees.”

The cabinet has instructed the Foreign Ministry to start a new bidding process for the job.

The Maoist Party had called a banda on Monday opposing the deal made with India on 23 March. It has now been withdrawn.
